Island's only major alpine recreation area, is centrally located 100 km (62
mi) north of Nanaimo, 50 km (31
mi) south of Campbell River,
and just 25 km (16 mi) west of Courtenay
and Comox. A well-kept secret
amongst Islanders, Mount
Washington Alpine Resort receives, on average, 900 cm (354 in) of snowfall
a year. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers a snow tubing
lift, a natural luge track, cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails, as well
as rental equipment for all of these activities. During the summer months, the
resort's chairlifts facilitate hiking and downhill mountain biking, and visitors
can also try mini golf or a horseback riding excursion. The Mount Washington Village
offers a variety of amenities, including a number of shops and services, as well
as several eating establishments, some offering live entertainment. Other attractions
in and around Mount Washington include Strathcona
Provincial Park and the Comox
Glacier.
